One of the changes from 6.52 to 7.x is that you now can share your database on a local computer. When you share a database, DataEase need to use locking, and that slows things down.

DataEase 7.2 is a very much improved version of DataEase 7 and hopefully the answer to a lot of what you have asked for and maybe even some more! It is a compilation of the features and improvements you have been telling us since DataEase first hit the market. Added to these we have added our own wish list to release a product that we think is simply the best DataEase 7 ever. The changes range from a new look and feel to powerful new features. They include:

Finally Windows 7 is with us and it looks to be all that Vista should have been. Over the last weeks we have tested our products extensively on both x86 (32 bit) and x64 (64 bit) Windows 7 and this is what we have found, and the answer is simply: 7 + 7.2 = True

DataEase in different “national costumes” disappeared with version 6 of DataEase. There might be many reasons for this, both good and bad. The new team in DataEase is a “Benetton” team, so we quickly discovered how limiting it is to only have an English version of the product. This is why we have decided that we will re-introduce language versions in DataEase.

DataEase 7.2.2 has been "slip stream" released in end of November. We have not wanted to advertise this release widely because we still have some fixes we want to include before it goes on general advertised release.

ShellExecuteA performs an operation on a specified file. It uses the file associations within Windows, so you do not need to know the location of the application just the name of the file you wish to perform the action on. In order to use ShellExecuteA you must first register the following CDF in DataEase 7.2

Quite simply, because we understand that you want solutions - fast! Solutions that are quick and easy to implement, yet powerful and flexible in operation. Most Databases demand that you spend a long time writing programs. DataEase is different; its powerful building blocks make system development fast and easy. So you don't need to be a computer expert, instead, you simply tell DataEase what you want and it works out how, now that's real user empowerment.

The target group for 7.2 is existing DataEase users, especially 6.5 and 7.x users. We will not target new users until we release DataEase 7.3 when we will have a complete new tutorial, sample applications and a fully working help system.

One of the things that has constantly been a headache for DataEase developers, has been the intrusiveness of DataEase when used on vertical applications. DataEase has been around for over 25 years and in this time hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of specialized applications have been created, sold, distributed and used all over the world.

7.2 is much, much more than we first intended 7.5 to be, and if you measure the distance between 7.0 and 7.1 it should not be 7.2 or 7.5, but a “slightly” higher number.

It is our goal to make 7.3 available at the end of this year and hence we have kept our ambitions in check. This is really changes that we feel should have been included in 7.2, but due to time constraints and a desperate need for a replacement of both 6.52 and 7.1, we decided to do this in 2 steps. The major changes in 7.3 will be as follows:

Over the years some “fixes” have been applied in DataEase to accommodate the introduction of new functionality. Time has always been an issue and quick fixes sometimes implemented. This sometimes resulted in unwanted behavior which over time could be quite annoying.

DataEase 7.2 is now here and it is already in our opinion much more stable than any other versions of DataEase for a long time. DataEase and Ffenics both share the same core product and Ffenics is a result of a split in DataEase strategy and team. This is in fact the second time the DataEase development team and product have split up in radically different paths over its 25 year history. DataEase split up in the early 90s, and the result was DataEase for Windows and Enterprise Developer (Symantec).

DataEase 7.2 is basically a serious bug fix for earlier versions of 7 and as such the list of fixes, updates, changes etc is substantial with well over a 1000 jobs allocated. Each job can contain many different fixes to the product. The list below is not exhaustive as we have only included the fixes and changes that we think can be of general interest and to illustrate what we have focused on in this version, which is quality assurance, look and feel and usability in using DataEase after an application is developed and for the developer to create good looking applications.

When DataEase Express was first introduced it was based on a lot of sound and interesting assumptions. It was the beginning of the Windows era, and DataEase Express had embraced the mantra of Windows. A lot of the assumptions of how people wanted to work have since been re-thought, but maybe not in DataEase.
